A blastocyst is an embryo that has matured to the stage where it is forming a fluid-filled core. This normally happens five to six days after ovulation and is an essential phase of embryo development. The insertion of blastocysts into the uterus is known as blastocyst transfer. The eggs are fertilized in the laboratory after the doctor removes them from the ovary (follicular aspiration). An egg begins to differentiate and grow into an embryo immediately after fertilization. The developmental stages are as follows:

When an embryo enters the blastocyst stage, biology tells us that it is a healthier embryo with a higher chance of implanting successfully and producing a normal, stable baby.

Who is eligible for blastocyst embryo transfer?

Ideally, all women will receive a transplant containing embryos that have matured to this level. This method of transfer, however, is not appropriate for all women.

The day of embryo transfer is determined by the number and condition of embryos available on the third day after the woman’s eggs are harvested.

If a woman has four or more high-quality embryos on the third day after egg harvest, she would almost certainly have blastocysts two days later. If the woman is above the age of 35 or has a low number of high-quality embryos on the third day after delivery, she is less likely to have blastocysts two days later. For these women, a day-three embryo transfer is usually preferable.

What are the blastocyst transition success rates?

During blastocyst transfer, the odds of becoming pregnant are very high. When compared to embryo transfer at an early developmental stage (day 2 or 3), the chances rise by around 7%.
