IVF Process, also known as assisted reproductive technology, is the procedure of fertilizing a human egg outside of the body and then implanting the early embryo (or blastocyst) in a woman’s uterus. When a couple is unable to conceive on their own, IVF is widely used. In vitro fertilization is also utilized to prevent genetic diseases that parents might be concerned about. The procedure is now relatively frequent, and complications are extremely unlikely. Although not every IVF procedure results in a pregnancy, it has become a viable choice for those who are unable to conceive on their own.

The IVF Process

In vitro fertilization consists of five key steps:

Ovarian Stimulation – A hormone injection is administered three days after the start of a menstrual cycle, right beneath the skin around the stomach. Generally, this is done every day for nine to ten days. This stimulates the ovaries to produce a large number of eggs.

Retrieval of the Eggs – Once the eggs are declared to be ready for the egg retrieval process, one final “trigger” injection is given to prepare the eggs for retrieval. During a clinical visit about 36 hours later, all viable eggs are extracted with a needle. Multiple eggs are retrieved for the purpose of increasing the likelihood of fertilization success.

Retrieval of the Sperm – If the woman’s partner’s sperm count is insufficient or he has had a vasectomy, sperm can be retrieved straight from the testicles. Otherwise, sperm is generally obtained directly from the partner. Previously stored sperm sample collection, such as donated sperm, can also be used.

Egg Fertilization – In a laboratory container, sperm and eggs are merged for the embryo development stage. As the cells split and multiply, they are carefully monitored and can be examined for genetic

diseases. When moved, the best-fertilized egg, known as a blastocyst, has the potential to implant. If multiple blastocysts grow and their cells continue to divide, they can be stored and saved for later transfer.

Embryo Transfer – The developed blastocyst is transferred through the cervix and into the uterus through a catheter about five days after conception. This short procedure is comparable to a pap smear in which the vagina is opened with a speculum. A clinic visit is made after two weeks to ascertain whether the transfer was effective in achieving pregnancy.

Is IVF Process Painful?

The majority of women state that their amount of worry was greater than their level of discomfort. The needles used for the injections are extremely thin, reducing discomfort. When the ovaries are stimulated, they swell larger than usual, causing some bloating and pain.

The patient is sedated moderately during the egg extraction procedure. There could be some soreness after the treatment, but there is little to no pain during the procedure. There might be some minor pain during embryo transfer.

When Should You Consider IVF?

It all hinges on your age and health condition. Time is important as you get older. The sooner you can extract healthy eggs, the better your likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

If you are under the age of 35, you should think about IVF after a year of attempting to conceive. After six months of attempting, IVF is suggested for people aged 35 to 40. And If you are above the age of 40, it is three months. A reproductive endocrinologist (RE) can assist you in determining whether IVF is a viable choice for your health and situation.
